Established in March 2022, the International Center for Sedimentary Geochemistry and Biogeochemistry Research at Chengdu University of Technology strives to be recognized as an international hub for world-class innovative center in geochemical research. It is founded jointly by the Institute of Sedimentary Geology and State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation of Chengdu University of Technology.

Mission

The center adheres to the core values of "problem-oriented, technological advancement, interdisciplinary, integration and innovation". It uses cutting-edge technologies to meet the challenges of international scientific frontiers, with a goal to help strategic deployments of national ecological security and energy security, and combines the unique advantages and development needs of earth science research of Chengdu University of Technology to strengthen basic science and applied science research. The center strives to cultivate a sense of patriotism, responsibility, international perspective, innovative power, promote the development of interdisciplinary research across the spectra of sedimentary geochemistry and biogeochemistry, and build a leading international research platform for sedimentary and biogeochemistry.

Research Field

The center mainly conducts basic and applied research in the fields of sedimentary geochemistry and biogeochemistry (including isotope geochemistry). The current research field focuses on the reconstruction of the Earth's surface environment conditions during key geological intervals and the development of cutting-edge geochemical technologies, exploring the evolution of the Earth's habitability and the co-evolution of life and environment, as well as their impact on mineral and energy resources.

Research Platform

The center has approximately 1000 m² of dedicated office space and over 500 m² of research laboratories. Our research platform consists of a chemical pre-treatment laboratory, a class-1000 clean laboratory, an elemental analysis laboratory, a gas-source stable isotope laboratory, a non-traditional stable isotope analysis laboratory, and a simulation and supercomputing laboratory. The facilities include large-scale instruments and equipment such as Neoma MC-ICP-MS, iCAP TQ ICP-MS, iCAP RQ ICP-MS, Expect 6000 ICP-OES, Delta Q IRMS, 253 Plus IRMS, etc.

Research Team

The center currently has 7 research scientists, 2 technicians, 3 postdoctoral fellows, 1 visiting scholar, 1 management staff and 11 graduate students.

Research Output

At present, the research members of the center have undertaken 16 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China Distinguished Young Scholars project, Major Program of National Science Foundation of China, National Program on Key Basic Research Project，National Key R&D Program project, Foundation for Innovative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China etc. The research members have published more than 150 scientific articles on Nature, Science, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, PNAS, Geology, EPSL, GCA, GPC, etc. 

Organization

The center is directed by Professor Chao Li, who oversees the daily operation of the center. Associate Director, Research Professor Meng Cheng, manages the recruitment, scientific research, and other related work. Associate Director, Research Professor Xinyang Chen, is responsible for the center's external relationship and academic exchange, graduate enrollment, security and management, and other related work. Technical supervisor, Zihu Zhang, is responsible for the research and development of experimental technology, external analytical and testing services, and the management and operation of experimental platforms.
