The International Center for Sedimentary Geochemistry and Biogeochemistry Research is a multi-faceted platform that serves as both an advanced level scientific research and innovation hub, as well as an important talent development center. The center's team is dedicated to exploring sedimentary geochemistry and biogeochemistry, with a primary focus on the synergistic evolution of the early Earth environment and life, as well as the biogeochemical processes and mechanisms of ancient and modern oceans. Adhering to their philosophy of “unity, upward mobility, truth-seeking, and innovation”, the center prioritizes the cultivation of exceptional talents with a strong national sentiment, international vision, innovative spirit, and practical abilities.

The center fosters a harmonious humanistic atmosphere, actively encouraging students to participate in the management of public affairs, including various public activities within the department and university. This includes volunteering for university sports games and academic conferences, helping to enhance students’ sense of ownership, cultivate their sense of responsibility and loyalty to family and country.

Participation in events

Lab and field skills training is a crucial aspect of the center’s curriculum. The center is dedicated to implementing a talent training system that combines theory and practice in order to enhance students’ practical skills and foster an innovative mindset. It provides a well-equipped research platform, including approximately 500 m2 of chemical pre-treatment and instrumental analysis laboratories. These labs house advanced large-scale instruments such as the multi-receiver inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer.

The center encourages students to engage in original research and explore new fields. Through numerous hands-on experimental technology practices, students develop their practical abilities and enhance their innovative thinking. Additionally, the center organizes field geological trekking and sampling work to foster students’ geological understanding and field skills while nurturing their appreciation for the natural landscapes of their homeland.

Furthermore, the center encourages students to engage in original research and explore new fields. The center emphasizes the development of cross-disciplinary knowledge and aims to cultivate well-rounded talents. The research direction of the center focuses on the synergistic evolution of early Earth environment and life, as well as the study of ancient-modern marine biogeochemical processes and mechanisms. This research involves various disciplines such as geology, geochemistry, sedimentology, mineralogy, stratigraphy, geobiology, microbiology, paleontology, and instrumental analysis.

To ensure students stay informed about the latest advancements in their field, the center arranges regular academic lectures and invites experts from both domestic and international institutions for academic exchange visits. Students are also encouraged to actively participate in domestic and international academic conferences. Through these activities, the center aims to facilitate students’ understanding of the discipline’s forefront, broaden their scientific research horizons, promote cross-disciplinary collaboration, and ultimately nurture them into well-rounded professionals.

Participation in academic events

The Center actively engages in international cooperation and exchanges to cultivate students’ global perspective. With a broad range of international partnership networks, the Center maintains strong collaborative relationships with esteemed universities around the world, including the University of California, Riverside in the USA, the University of Cincinnati in the USA, the University of Leeds in the UK, and the University of Western Australia in Australia. The Center invites renowned experts to visit the University and collaborates with universities across the globe in postgraduate student training to enhance students’ ability to engage in international exchange and expand their global horizons.

International Academic Exchanges

Furthermore, the Center undertakes significant scientific research projects funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology, which offers substantial financial support and expansive development opportunities for students to delve deeper into their respective specialties and the scientific frontier.
