The 7th National Sedimentological Congress, hosted by Chengdu University of Technology, was held in Chengdu from April 2nd to 5th, 2023. This congress, with the theme of “Sedimentology and Habitable Earth,” focused on the goal of “protecting this blue planet.” It provided a platform for summarizing and exchanging research achievements and progress in sedimentology in China in recent years, as well as discussing the future direction of sedimentology. It was a significant academic event with a great influence in the field of sedimentology.

Our center’s faculty and graduate students actively participated in the conference and engaged in extensive academic exchanges. Professor Chao Li, the director of our center, presided over the special forum on “Ancient Oceans and Paleoclimate - Synergy between Earth Environments and Life Evolution during the Neoproterozoic to Early Paleozoic Transition.” He also led the organization of the academic salon on “Atmospheric Oxygenation and Planetary Habitability Environment,” which received a warm response. Center members actively participated in academic exchanges and delivered 6 oral presentations and 1 poster presentation in the four topics under the themes of “Ancient Oceans and Paleoclimate” and “Fundamental Theories and Progress in Sedimentology.”

It is reported that the conference had over 2,000 scholars from universities, research institutes, and production units across the country, with 1,226 ordinary representatives and 843 student representatives in attendance. The participating expert representatives gave a total of five international expert reports, 15 conference reports, and 149 special invited reports. In addition, over 1,400 papers and over 500 posters were collected, fully demonstrating the progress and development of China’s sedimentology discipline in recent years.

This conference fully showcased the latest research achievements of sedimentology in addressing challenges in energy and resource transformation, climate and environmental areas, and building an ecosystem that respects nature. It explores the future development direction of sedimentology, formulates the development strategy of sedimentology discipline, and promotes the continued and comprehensive development of sedimentology in areas related to the survival and development of the earth, addressing the challenges in national resource and environmental security, and promoting the harmonious development of humans and nature.

This conference also provided direction for the future development of our center. Our center will continue to adhere to the development concept of “problem-oriented, technological research and development, interdisciplinary, and innovation integration”. We will focus on the major strategic deployments of national ecological security and energy security, conduct in-depth research on the basic theory of co-evolution of ancient environments and life and the development and application of new sedimentology technology and methods, and promote the development of the sedimentology discipline.
